About the 3D site

Inspiration

I can remember seeing some old Victorian stereo photos in the 1960's and being fascinated by them. I had almost forgotten about them when my interest was revived by an interview on Radio 4 with Brian May (of 'The Queen' and the London Stereoscopic Company). He had just published a book (along with Elena Vidal) of stereo photos from the 1850's!!! - "A Village Lost & Found". An amazing book and highly recommended.

Practice

I have long been interested in photography, so I started to take some stereo photos digitally - edited them on my computer - and was delighted to discover how easy it was to make stereo photos work.

At first I used a single camera, moving it between shots. Now I use 2 cameras (Twin Panasonic Lumix TZ7's) mounted on three different homemade 'bars' which allow alignment of the cameras and also allows me to use different stereo bases for long shots and close ups. I simply press both shutter buttons at the same time. I also use a Canon digital SLR with a beam splitter.

Trial and error has improved my technique - but there is still plenty to learn.

The web site

Initially I printed out my photos and shows them to friends and family. Without exception they were fascinated and keen to see more. I put them on Facebook - but the resolution was too low. So I wrote this website to improve viewability and to spread the word further. Another interest of mine is classic VW's - we have a business making gifts and practical items for VW fans. So you'll see a lot of photos on this site of VW's - but I also intend to put many other subjects on the site.

Enjoy! - 'H' Gregg
